Swirlies
Their name sounds like a gel pen or a taffy from the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory, I am aware. Their sound, though, is not as friendly. Offbeat and offkey and, in all other senses, just plain off, Swirlies is a group of four (the female not pictured) from Boston who started up in 1990 and died in 1992. The band has reincarnated in various forms since then, with fresh lineups and various offshoots. Male vocals sounds like that of Death Cab if he had a cold, female vocals like an eight-year old Charlotte Church. It may sound like everything I've said about the band thus far is negative, but please don't get me wrong; I really like them. Amidst the musical oddities and "sneakyflute" sound, there lies in Swirlies a lo-fi gem.
